The book ‘Digital Minimalism’ written by Cal Newport revolves around the ways and means by which one can live a focused life in the increasingly noisy world. Minimalism is the art of knowing how much is just enough. Digital Minimalism applies to the idea of living an attentive life in the world filled with distractions.
The author introduces a philosophy of technology use that has already improved countless lives.
Hang up, log off and tune in to a different way to be in the world is the smart advice that Cal gives to his readers through this book. Cal shares some practical techniques for all the technology geeks out there, which can help them to develop a mental well-being and financial success. Technology is intrinsically neither good nor bad. The key is using it to support your goals and values, rather than letting it use you. This book shows the way.
My learning from the book:
1. Thirty-days “Digital De clutter process: By clearing the mess from life’s path, we can all make possibility for the most significant aspects of life: health, connections, passion, development, and contribution.
2. Overcome FOMO (fear of missing out): It means valued gained should be seen from doing things and not missing out on things, which are not done. There will always be something that will be left out. Hence, it is important to prioritize and select things, which are most important for ones well-being. Reconnecting with self through regular periods of solitude helps in a significant manner.
3. Digital clutter is stressful: The traditional minimalists correctly noted that living among lots of physical clutter is stressful. The same is true of one’s online life. Incessant clicking and scrolling generates a background hum of anxiety. Drastically reducing the number of things one does in his/her digital life can by itself have a significant calming impact. This value should not be underestimated.
4. Attention is rare and fragile: We have a finite amount of attention to expend each day. If aimed carefully, the rightly channelized attention can bring one great meaning and satisfaction. Turning off social media notifications during face-to-face conversations is a healthy habit one can adopt.
5. Many of the best uses of the online world support better living offline: We are not evolved for digital life, which is why binges of online activities often leave us in a confused state of strung out exhaustion. This explains why many of the highest return online activities are those that take advantage of the Internet to improve important aspects of your offline life. E.g. health tips, skill building etc.
Digital Minimalism is an idea about using technology in a matured manner. It is an attitude that helps one interrogate what digital communication tools (and behaviors surrounding these tools) add the most value to one’s life. It is motivated by the belief that deliberately and aggressively clearing away low-value digital noise, and enhancing ones’ use of the tools that really matter, can meaningfully improve ones’ life quality.
The author has used simple words to explain the ways of cutting down on technological distractions and enjoying the benefits of an online life. A lot of this stuff is already common knowledge. However, the way Cal has presented with detailed case studies and suggested strategies will make someone nod the head all the way through. I loved the philosophical style that Cal has shared in the book along with anecdotes and practical suggestions. I would recommend this book to somebody who does not want to reject technology but instead embrace the immense value these new tools can offer…if you are willing to do the hard work of figuring out how to best leverage them on behalf of the things you truly care about , then this book is a must read.
